Unswerving self-belief, industriousness and devotion to writing saw to the vindication of this young author\'s hopes. In 1955, the Icelandic novelist Halldor Kiljan Laxness was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature. He had admiring readers in the US (including Hemingway), the Soviet Union and throughout Scandinavia. In his own country he was both a hero and a figure of constant controversy.
